Is Mercury in Pittsburgh Water an Issue?

Mercury in Pittsburgh water could be an issue. While it does not likely make it to your tap, you should always be careful what you eat if you’re fishing for it locally. But even buying it could be cause for concern.

An older research study (2007) suggested fish caught in Lake Erie and sold commercially in Pittsburgh contained levels of mercury two-to-four timex higher than fish caught in the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers.

National watersheds impacted by mercury contamination, according to the EPA, include more than 6.3 million acres of lakes, reservoirs and ponds, almost 47,000 miles of rivers and streams, 2,000 square miles of bays and estuaries, 225,000 acres of wetlands, and about 32,000 square miles of the Great Lakes.

Types of Mercury In Pittsburgh Water


The first is organic mercury, which occurs naturally in the environment and comes from sources like volcanic activity and other natural offgassing processes. Where things get complicated — and potentially hazardous for humans — is the second kind: inorganic mercury.

Inorganic mercury refers to natural mercury compounds that have been altered through industrial- or other man-made processes. These can be more harmful and appear in higher concentrations than other forms of organic mercury. Inorganic mercury also accumulates in organisms over time, which is why mercury contamination is a concern when consuming fish and other seafood.

Mercury, in either form, is a neurotoxin. So people who consume either water that’s been polluted with mercury, or fish that have consumed large quantities of mercury, put themselves at risk for neurological complications.

Identifying Mercury in Water


Is there mercury in Pittsburgh water? Mercury is naturally found in the environment. However, with the advancement of industry, more and more inorganic mercury has found its way into aquatic ecosystems through mining as a byproduct of coal-fired power plants and other manufacturing that uses heavy metals.

Mercury can also be introduced into water systems through improper waste handling. For example, batteries and other forms of electronic waste can leach mercury into water.

While some amount of naturally-occuring mercury in water is normal and not detrimental for consumption, the EPA has set the maximum level of mercury concentration for safety at 0.002 mg/L or 2 ppb (parts per billion).

Protecting Against Mercury Contamination
